California | San Quentin begins prison reform - but not for those on death row

Image
California is transferring everyone on death row at San Quentin prison to other places, as it tries to reinvent the state's most notorious facility as a rehabilitation centre. Many in this group will now have new freedoms. But they are also asking why they've been excluded from the reform - and whether they'll be safe in new prisons. Keith Doolin still remembers the day in 2019 when workers came to dismantle one of the United States' most infamous death chambers.

Pakistan: Four hanged in Lahore, Multan, Sahiwal

May 23, 2015: At least four murder convicts were sent to the gallows in the jails of Lahore, Multan and Sahiwal, raising the total number of executions to 111 since Pakistan reversed the self-imposed moratorium on the death penalty in December 2014 after the Taliban school massacre.

Two death row inmates were executed in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Central Jail.

One of them, identified as Ehsaan, was sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) for killing a person in 2002, while Rashid Muneer, had killed two people, Khalid and Imtiaz, over a minor dispute in 1991.

Abdul Ghaffar was executed in Multan Central Jail for killing his wife and two other people in 1999 over a family dispute.

Mohammad Wazir was hanged in Sahiwal Central Jail for killing a man in Rajanpur in 1991.

Meanwhile, murder convict Mohammad Saleem got a reprieve as the aggrieved side approached the magistrate with the deal document at the eleventh hour. Saleem had killed his cousin in 2004.
